Thank you for your help and guidance in putting the structure to my job search. I have been in this situation before and gave up by taking the first job that seemed reasonable. It was frustrating but I stuck to my guns and found a job that is a good fit and has a lot of the things I am looking for. Being able to put my previous accomplishments together was by far the toughest part and very hard to sell because I had no records. Now I have a clearer understanding of documenting myself as a value in many industries and will be able to better utilize these items if I have to enter the job market again.

I recall well the day I went to a job fair in
Santa Clara
, mainly because I discovered that Visa, one of my target companies, would be there. It took not even five minutes to chat with the managers at the Visa booth so I decided to walk around and check out who else was there.
That was when I met you. Everything that you had told me was so true. For the first time, I felt like someone was going to be on my side when it came to my career. I had dealt with agencies and recruiters for more than 10 years. I have a few that I trusted and with whom I had formed good relationships. At the end of the day, however, I could not expect them to take my side because they were in fact, agency representatives.
I signed up for AA-Careers on Nov. 29th and by the 16th of February, I had confirmed a position with [company name withheld]. Not bad considering I took a couple of weeks off during the holidays. There were two other opportunities that came my way while I was working to solidify the position I eventually accepted. Also, I was able to negotiate about $15,000 more that I was previously making.
Everything that my advisor told me made sense. He was incredibly patient. I used to go into interviews with knots in my stomach. Now, I am very confident when going to interviews, even for positions that I do not feel fully qualified.

First the good news: It is with pleasure that I announce that I have found an excellent position as Account Executive with the company who bought out my former employer. Even after 1½ years of absence, my references worked out very well.
The bad news: I will be moving to Toronto, so I will not be able to network with you in the Silicon Valley market, or what’s left of it for now.
I am very satisfied with the efforts that you and your colleagues have put forth. Sometimes it’s the little things that make a big difference. I had gone to another career center where all I saw was a bunch of people (not to call them losers) whining and complaining about how bad the economy is. I found that your attitude was to ignore the bad and to focus on building a strong image. I must admit that you really succeeded in uplifting my attitude and making me push on until I succeeded.
I also found the personality analysis and the soul searching to be very useful. I was too focused on selling my recent expertise in Network Security and did not present my resume emphasizing ALL my historical accomplishments versus only the recent ones. When this prospect read my new resume, he didn’t even hesitate to make the offer. And yet this job does not involve security.
I liked the negotiating portion. My new employer tried a rapid close by offering $80K base and 1% commission on bookings. That’s it; that’s all. Based on your negotiating recommendations, I managed to:
- Increase the base from $80K to $85K;
- Get a $500 a month car allocation (a non-taxable benefit worth the same as $12K/year);
- The 1% of booking remains the same;
- $5K for relocation;
- Stock options, I expect they may be worth as much as $600K over 4 years or $150K per year based on their historical growth pattern, even taking into account the current industry slowdown. Actually it’s great because the set value is at a low in their growth curve.
In retrospect, having a strong resume, working my network and good negotiation has allowed me to go from $135K US per year plus stock options in my last position to $150K CDN (averaged over the next 3 years because bookings are on 3 year contracts). Considering that the cost of living in Toronto is about 40% less than Silicon Valley, you can consider CDN revenue to be at par with US revenue from a numerical perspective.
Considering that I have been unemployed for 5 months and that prospects in Silicon Valley were few and far between, I consider that I am recovering about $25K per month ($300K/year potential of this job). So your fees (which are tax deductible) are very much worth the expense. You also saved me the cost of a psychiatrist. Thank you very much and it has been a pleasure working with you.
