Wang* came to the United States from Taiwan in 1992 to obtain a MS and PhD in Environmental and Industrial Health. After graduation, he tried to obtain a career position in the field he had studied but was not successful. He accepted a job in a medium size software firm doing IT work. He got that job through a recruiter who had him remove the PhD from his resume, because the recruiter said the company would feel he was over qualified.

From 2000 to 2007 his salary rose to $78K, but he received no advancement in title In 2007 the company had a major lay-off, and Wang was one of the people let go. Wang went back to the same recruiter who then found him a contract position with a small company that they said could only afford to pay him $65K.

In late 2008, Wang (who never liked the job or the salary) attended a Dice Target Job Fair in the Santa Clara Convention Center. He got in line at AA-Career's Free Resume Critique booth. We spent some time with Wang and he told us he never really wanted to have a career in the IT field, and told us about his PhD, and why he had come to this country. We did a major revision of his resume, wished him "good luck" and we gave him an AA-Careers business card. He decided to come back to us for help.

Job Hunting Campaign Duration: 3 months

Wang became a client in October. He was assigned to work with Katherine Hicks, a seasoned Career Consultant at AACareers. In December he completed the campaign, receiving an offer from a Bay Area Environmental Consulting firm. His starting salary was $85K with a promised increase as his billing numbers increased. In his Market Campaign Completion form, he thanked Catherine for helping him make the career change into the field that he had spent 8 years in college to learn. Wang said "you made the task manageable, you kept me on target, and did a great job preparing me for the interviews."  He got the job offer in late December.  In a thank you letter to us he said, "You have made my dream come true, I will keep you guys posted on my accomplishments and I will keep my promise to you to go home after 5 years of experience and help my country with their environmental problems."
